Grimmfest says: One of two films from Jacob Santana, teamed with Spanish screen icon, Belén Rueda (although here she takes a supporting role to Jaime Lorente, best known in the UK for MONEY HEIST). An intricately structured psychological neo-noir, shot in fluid, jittery style, mostly at night, in alienating, modern neon-lit buildings, and shadowy backstreets, it is both a detailed exploration of escalating paranoia and a sneaky, slippery exercise in expectation-swerving, self-deconstructing switchback storytelling. And on the surface, it couldn’t be more different than EVIL DRESS; a real testament to Santana’s extraordinary visual versatility. But there are connections. Both films hinge on a sudden ground-shaking, rug-pulling reveal; a startling perception shift, which forces the viewer to totally reconsider everything that has happened up until that point. It’s a risky narrative strategy, but Santana is a true master of it, creating meticulously detailed, utterly immersive worlds for his characters, which lure the viewer in, carefully concealing just how subjective the viewpoint might be. Tense, stylish, tightly paced, beautifully shot, consistently surprising and shocking, and anchored by a complex, nuanced, sympathetic lead turn from Lorente, this, alongside EVIL DRESS marks Santana out as a major talent in Spanish cinema.
