Danny Boyle & Alex Garland teaming up again for 28 YEARS LATER!

January 14, 2024 grimmfest

Finally!

But what happened to MONTHS?

Danny Boyle and Alex Garland (ANNIHILATION, MEN, this year’s CIVIL WAR), the director and writer behind 2002’s hit horror film 28 DAYS LATER, are reteaming for the long-awaited sequel, 28 YEARS LATER. This could also be a start of a new trilogy!

THR broke this one, reporting that the “new zombie thriller is expected to hit studios, streamers and other potential buyers, according to multiple sources. WME, which reps Boyle and Garland, will take out the package and handle the sale.”

The original starred Cillian Murphy as a man who wakes up in a deserted London, coming across other survivors (among them Naomie Harris, Brendan Gleeson and Christopher Eccleston) after the Rage virus destroys the country. 2007 brought the frantic 28 WEEKS LATER, with the virus making a comeback and wreaking havoc on one hell of a cast – Robert Carlyle, Imogen Poots, Idris Elba, Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner and Harold Perrineau all turn up!

Speaking at a 20th anniversary screening of DAYS a couple of years ago, Boyle said:

“I’d be very tempted [to direct it],” Boyle said at the time, referring to the new script that Alex Garland had written. “It feels like a very good time actually. It’s funny, I hadn’t thought about it until you just said it, and I remembered ‘Bang, this script!’ which is again set in England, very much about England. Anyway, we’ll see… who knows?”

Boyle added at the time, “It might come back into focus because one of the things that’s happening in the business at the moment is it has to be a big reason for you to go to the cinema, because there are less and less reasons. It’s hard for companies distributing films and for cinema chains to show films, they’re struggling to get people into the cinema unless it’s something like TOP GUN: MAVERICK or a Marvel. But a third part would get people in, if it was half-decent.”

No plot details yet, but stay tuned!
