Billy Crumpus has never been the confident type. A socially awkward college student with a goofy charm that never quite lands, he hits rock bottom after a humiliating encounter with a group of girls at a party. Seeing their friend spiralling, Billy’s ride-or-die duo- Sonny and Dee- decide it’s time for drastic measures. Their plan? Take him to the one place that’s never let them down: the chair of their favorite barber, the wildly eccentric and possibly deranged Mick.
What starts as a simple haircut quickly spirals into a surreal nightmare. As Mick’s behaviour grows increasingly unhinged, it becomes clear he may be hiding something far more sinister- possibly connected to the recent disappearance of a local college girl. Trapped in a barbershop turned battleground, Billy is forced to confront more than just his insecurities. On the worst day of his life, he might finally discover what he’s been missing all along.
GRIMMFEST SAYS: Imagine AFTER HOURS directed by John Hughes – or maybe PRETTY IN PINK directed by Martin Scorsese – and you might to some extent be prepared for the truly unsettling experience of Kyle Misak’s delirious, disturbing and deadly dark comedy of bad manners. Fusing together and in the process repurposing and reinventing two of the most popular of 80s film genres – High School Coming of Age, and Yuppie Nightmare – it’s a blackhearted, breakneck, frantically farcical tale of escalating embarrassment that constantly threatens to sour into something more sinister, as the hapless hero finds himself at the mercy of the camp, creepy, and increasingly crazed barber, Mick, played with spectacular panache and off-the-chain unpredictability by the extraordinary Frankie Ray, like some monster hybrid of the New York Dolls’ David Johansen and Ted Levine’s Buffalo Bill in SILENCE OF THE LAMBS. Capturing perfectly the look and tone while mischievously and provocatively toying with and subverting the prejudices and assumptions of the cinematic era it evokes, this about as far from a nostalgia trip as is humanly possible, and all the better for it.
